About

My interest in ceramics stems back to the time I lived in the Cornish seaside town of St Ives, as a child. Its rich artistic heritage, and the place itself, left an indelible mark on me and still informs my work today. Having studied ceramics on the BA degree course in Cardiff, I have since laid down roots in Monmouthshire, where I split my time between family life, teaching and making pots in my studio at the end of the garden.

I am fascinated by the continual challenge (sometimes battle) of creating a harmonious synthesis between the contrasting elements of form and surface. Current work involves exploring the relationship between the subtle, quieter areas of the ceramic surface and the louder, more dominant sections of saturated colour. I take inspiration from a variety of sources that range from a walk in the landscape in fading light, to modernist architecture and post-war studio pottery. I even wonder, from time to time, how a piece of music, such as Kraftwerk’s Autobahn, would look as a pot!

My work is thrown and turned on the wheel, using stoneware and porcelain bodies. I then add a variety of slips, underglazes and glazes, which are fired to around 1250 ͦC. I like to work with traditional ceramic forms, but I am also keen to explore a contemporary aesthetic.

I have exhibited my work at: The New Designers exhibition, London; St Fagans Pottery, Museum of Welsh Life, Cardiff; Penhaven Gallery, St Ives, Cornwall; The Affordable Art Fair, London, and The Court Cupboard Craft Gallery, Abergavenny.
